79-year-old John Randle said: "On VJ Day I was in Burma, facing the Japanese - 60 miles from where I'd started nearly four years before!

"Sadly one of my comrades died only the day before yesterday. We're pretty thin on the ground now.

"It's gratifying that people all these years later can recognise that we existed."
