The total cost of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link was estimated to be �5.2bn, in 1997 prices, with taxpayers contributing at least �1.8bn.

The first section of the project opened in 2003 on time and to budget, and the second, main section is expected to follow suit.

However, a National Audit Office report in July 2005 warned about "too optimistic" passenger revenue forecasts and the risk of taxpayers having to make up any shortfall.
