The process of globalisation has paid huge dividends for McDonald's. Some 17,000 of its 31,000 restaurants, and two-thirds of its revenues, are outside the US.

In Moscow, McDonald's opened before the collapse of the Soviet Union; its Pushkin Square restaurant - although now one of 103 Russia-wide - is still the busiest McDonald's in the world.
