In the past couple of years, a bulky shadow has been cast over McDonald's fortunes. Just as the tobacco industry was brought low by smokers' lawsuits, so McDonald's is being blamed for runaway rates of obesity.

Many of the complaints may be frivolous, but the firm's image has suffered.
