At first glance, the potential is there. According to the most optimistic forecasts, the Caspian Sea could be producing almost 6 million barrels of oil per day - equivalent to 8% of global demand - by 2010.

Remember it's optimistic, though: cautious pundits reckon 3 million barrels looks more likely. Even that should bring in about $4bn a year.
