The combination of soaring prices and below-average income has sent rural homelessness figures rocketing.

Although still below urban levels, the rate of increase in remote rural areas is the highest in England � 29.4% between 1999 and 2003.

And many end up sleeping on sofas or floors with friends or relatives, says the Countryside Agency.
