Second homes

The 1991 census estimated there were 125,000 second and holiday homes in England alone.

Ten years later the figure was more than 135,000 150,000 when Wales is added. Two-thirds of these are in rural spots.

The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors says that in 2003 nearly half the people buying rural property in England were non-farmers.
