The UK economy has proved surprisingly robust in the past couple of years, especially compared with sluggish Europe and Japan.

This is partly because the US, to which Britain is closely aligned, has bounced back strongly.

But Britain's growth is unbalanced, with housing and the public sector, rather than private investment, leading the way.
