NHS trusts and primary care trusts (PCTs) in the West Midlands have combined debts of more than 80m, a BBC News website investigation has found. All 58 trusts in the region - in Birmingham, The Black Country, Warwickshire, Hereford and Worcester, Shropshire and Staffordshire - were contacted in January and asked what their current financial status was. The results are below, with explanations for how some trusts came to be in that position, or measures taken to tackle any problems. Minus figures show a deficit, figures without a minus sign indicate a trust which has a surplus or is breaking even. Several trusts who revealed debts said they expected to break even by the end of the financial year in March. | WEST MIDLANDS HEALTH TRUST FINANCES | | | HEALTH TRUST | SURPLUS/ DEBT () | IMPACT/ EXPLANATION | | Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Trust | 0 | | | Birmingham Children's Hospital NHS Trust | 0 | | | Birmingham Women's Health Care NHS Trust | 0 | | | Burntwood, Lichfield and Tamworth PCT | -4,000,000 | | | Burton Hospitals NHS Trust | -1,200,000 | | | Cannock Chase PCT | 0 | | | Coventry PCT | 0 | | | Dudley Beacon and Castle PCT | 294,000 | | | Dudley Group of Hospitals NHS Trust | 0 | | | Dudley South PCT | 0 | | | East Staffordshire PCT | 0 | | | Eastern Birmingham PCT | 0 | | | George Eliot Hospital NHS Trust | -5,300,000 | | | Good Hope Hospital NHS Trust | -6,500,000 | Has imposed strict controls on staffing costs, including a commitment to reduce the workforce by 80, and will close a ward by the end of the financial year | | Heart of Birmingham PCT | 3,900,000 | | | Heartlands NHS Foundation Trust | 3,500,000 | | | Hereford Hospitals NHS Trust | 0 | | | Herefordshire and Worcestershire Ambulance NHS Trust | 0 | | | Herefordshire PCT | 0 | | | Mid Staffordshire General Hospitals NHS Trust | 0 | | | Newcastle under Lyme PCT | -715,000 | | | North Birmingham PCT | -950,000 | | | North Staffordshire Combined Healthcare NHS Trust | 0 | | | North Stoke PCT | -5,600,000 | | | North Warwickshire PCT | 0 | | | Oldbury and Smethwick PCT | -1,300,000 | | | Redditch and Bromsgrove PCT | 0 | | | Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic and District Hospital NHS Trust | 0 | | | Rowley Regis and Tipton PCT | -2,300,000 | | | Royal Wolverhampton Hospitals NHS Trust | -10,100,000 | | | Rugby PCT | 0 | | | Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust | -6,000,000 | Has introduced 37 money-saving projects, including losing nearly 200 staff through voluntary redundancy or retirement.
