NHS trusts and primary care trusts (PCTs) in the North East and Cumbria have combined debts of more than 60m, a BBC News website investigation has found. All 35 trusts in the region - in the Tyne, Wear and Tees areas and in Cumbria - were contacted in January and asked what their current financial status was. The results are below, with explanations for how some trusts came to be in that position, or measures taken to tackle any problems. Minus figures show a deficit, figures without a minus sign indicate a trust which has a surplus or is breaking even. Several trusts who revealed debts said they expected to break even by the end of the financial year in March. | NORTH EAST & CUMBRIA HEALTH TRUST FINANCES | | | HEALTH TRUST | SURPLUS/ DEBT () | IMPACT/ EXPLANATION | | Carlisle and District PCT | -108,000 | | | City Hospitals Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust | -1,970,000 | | | County Durham and Darlington Acute Hospitals NHS Trust | -1,100,000 | Reducing spending on agency staff | | County Durham and Darlington Priority Services NHS Trust | 0 | | | Cumbria Ambulance Service NHS Trust | -21,000 | | | Darlington PCT | -800,000 | Has made admin savings, frozen recruitment and examined management of waiting lists | | Derwentside PCT | -720,000 | | | Durham and Chester-le-Street PCT | -1,500,000 | | | Durham Dales PCT | -1,100,000 | | | Easington PCT | 1,100,000 | | | Eden Valley PCT | -166,000 | | | Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust | -495,000 | Has imposed a recruitment freeze and appointed an energy conservation manager | | Gateshead PCT | -2,650,000 | | | Hartlepool PCT | -4,000,000 | Carried this 4m debt over from 2004-2005 | | Langbaurgh PCT | 0 | | | Middlesbrough PCT | 632,000 | | | Newcastle PCT | -844,000 | | | Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Trust | -2,300,000 | Controlling stock and enhancing efficiency in attempt to cut debt | | Newcastle, North Tyneside and Northumberland Mental Health NHS Trust | -107,500 | Held back reserves as contingency | | North Cumbria Acute Hospitals NHS Trust | -1,400,000 | Attempting to cut spending on agency locums, has overspent on drugs | | North Cumbria Mental Health and Learning Disabilities NHS Trust | -58,000 | | | North East Ambulance Service NHS Trust | 270,000 | | | North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Trust | -11,600,000 | Has imposed a freeze on recruitment and restricted non-essential expenditure | | North Tees PCT | 50,000 | | | North Tyneside PCT | -898,000 | | | Northumberland Care Trust | -2,560,000 | | | Northumbria Healthcare NHS Trust | 250,000 | | | Sedgefield PCT | -3,800,000 | | | South of Tyne and Wearside Mental Health NHS Trust | -300,000 | | | South Tees Hospitals NHS Trust | -24,750,000 | 21m is debt carried over from previous financial year.
