NHS trusts and primary care trusts (PCTs) in the East Midlands have combined debts of nearly 50m, a BBC News website investigation has found. All 38 trusts in the region - in Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Lincolnshire - were contacted in January and asked what their current financial status was. The results are below, with explanations for how some trusts came to be in that position, or measures taken to tackle any problems. Minus figures show a deficit, figures without a minus sign indicate a trust which has a surplus or is breaking even. Several trusts who revealed debts said they expected to break even by the end of the financial year in March. | EAST MIDLANDS HEALTH TRUST FINANCES | | | HEALTH TRUST | SURPLUS/ DEBT () | IMPACT/ EXPLANATION | | Amber Valley PCT | 0 | | | Ashfield PCT | 190,000 | | | Bassetlaw PCT | -26,000 | | | Broxtowe and Hucknall PCT | 20,000 | | | Central Derby PCT | 19,000 | | | Charnwood and North West Leicestershire PCT | -2,800,000 | | | Chesterfield and North Derbyshire Royal Hospital NHS Foundation Trust | 2,744,000 | | | Chesterfield PCT | -234,000 | No closures, service changes or job losses | | Derby Hospital NHS Foundation Trust | -2,400,000 | | | Derbyshire Dales and South Derbyshire PCT | -188,000 | Expects to break even by end of financial year | | Derbyshire Mental Health Services NHS Trust | -840,000 | Reducing agency staff use, not affecting patient care and expects to break even by end of financial year | | East Lincolnshire PCT | -6,700,000 | Closed 15-bed ward at Skegness Hospital for four months, cut teenage advice sessions and closed two family planning clinics | | East Midlands Ambulance Service NHS Trust | -68,000 | | | Eastern Leicester PCT | -500,000 | Has made savings of 5m | | Erewash PCT | -163,000 | Recruitment freeze and non-mandatory training stopped | | Gedling PCT | -300,000 | | | Greater Derby PCT | 1,000 | | | High Peak and Dales PCT | -2,900,000 | Opening hours cut at Buxton Hospital minor injuries unit.
