'DNA link' to sex attack suspect
Prison truck
Antoni Imiela denies nine counts of rape against women and girls
DNA samples taken from a girl allegedly subjected to a sex attack were a match to part of a suspected serial rapist's gene profile, a court heard.

A scientist told Maidstone Crown Court it was 110 times more likely the DNA found on the 10-year-old's hands came from Antoni Imiela than anyone else.

Mr Imiela, 49, from Appledore, Kent, denies the girl's kidnap, attempted rape and indecent assault.

He had also pleaded not guilty to a further nine counts of rape.

Mr Imiela is accused of forcing the girl at knifepoint into his car as she walked along a road in Birmingham on 21 November 2002.

DNA profile match

The court has heard he then drove her along motorways and country roads for five hours, stopping to indecently assault the girl and to attempt to rape her.

On Monday, forensic scientist Dr Nicola Peck told the trial tests were carried out on DNA taken from the girl's hands, which showed that genetic material from two people was present.

Dr Peck said DNA components belonging to the girl were removed and the remaining material assessed.

She said: "These remaining components matched the corresponding components of Antoni Imiela's profile.

"I estimated that it was 110 times more likely that the DNA originated from (the girl) and Antoni Imiela than it originated from (the girl) and a person unrelated to Antoni Imiela."

Video identification parade

The court heard the girl had picked Mr Imiela out as the man who attacked her from a line-up of men in a video identification parade.

The police inspector who organised the "parade" had asked the girl if she wanted to see the images of the nine men again, the court heard.

But the jury heard the girl replied: "No thank you. I do not want to look at it any more. I know definitely who it is."

The inspector told the court three other alleged victims in the case had taken part in similar parades but none of them had picked out Mr Imiela.

Vehicle expert Andrew Wooller also gave evidence to the court on Monday.

Mr Wooller was asked to view a video recording of the girl describing the car she said she was driven around in.

He said she gave specific details which made him believe she had described a Citroen Xantia.

The trial has previously heard Mr Imiela drove the same model of car.

The case continues.
