Rape case fingerprints 'switched'
Prison truck
Antoni Imiela denies nine counts of rape against women and girls
A lawyer acting for a man charged with a series of rapes has alleged that a police scientist tampered with his fingerprints.

Antoni Imiela, of Appledore, Kent, denies raping five women and three girls and the kidnap, attempted rape and indecent assault of a 10-year-old.

Maidstone Crown Court was told he used a carrier bag as a pillow in one rape.

But Simon Russell-Flint, QC, defending, claimed a print was taken from Mr Imiela to transfer on to the bag.

Photographs from bag

Fingerprint expert Clifford Gulbis said that after Mr Imiela was arrested in December 2002 his fingerprints did not match photographs of marks on a bag from one of the attacks.

He later took his own fingerprints from Mr Imiela, making sure he took impressions from the tips of the fingers, one of which did match a photograph.

But Mr Russell-Flint claimed that it matched because the photograph had been switched by Mr Gulbis, or someone he had instructed, with an image of the defendant's fingerprint.

Mr Gulbis replied: "I am shocked and disgusted, actually.

"I have never been accused of anything like that in the last 15 years."

The case continues.
