Rape victim 'wanted to live'

Antoni Imiela denies nine counts of rape

The second victim of an alleged serial rapist submitted to her attacker because she was desperate to survive the ordeal, a court has heard.

Antoni Imiela is accused of grabbing the 30-year-old woman as she jogged near her home in Earlswood, Surrey, in July 2002 and then raping her.

Mr Imiela denies the charge and pleads not guilty to a further eight rapes against three girls under 16 and four women in Berkshire, west London and Hertfordshire during 2001 and 2002.

The 49-year-old former railway worker, of Appledore, near Ashford, in Kent, also denies the kidnap, indecent assault and attempted rape of a 10-year-old girl in Birmingham in November 2002.

In a statement read out at Maidstone Crown Court, the 30-year-old described how she tried to scratch her attacker and get a glimpse of him, but was punched and told she would be killed.

She said: "I was desperate to survive. I was terrified and realised that I was not going to get away from him.

"I thought that submitting to him was the only way I was going to avoid being killed."

Her attacker had a "forceful, sadistic and angry voice", she said.

"I'm happy that I didn't see his face because I am sure that it would have haunted me for a long time.

"I just wanted to live."

'Stay alive'

The court heard how the victim's hands were tied before she was raped.

The woman's statement said: "My priority was to get through this and stay alive."

Her attacker eventually let her go and told her to stay where she was for at least 20 minutes before he fled, she said.

After the woman went for help she was taken to hospital.

Dr Josephine Howitt, who examined her, said she had between 50 and 60 injuries on her, including scratches across her body.

The trial continues.
