| These are the 197 top schools in England on the basis of their pupils' performances in the 2004 GCSE-level exams. The first column of figures shows the new measure, published in October 2005: the proportion getting the equivalent of at least five grades A* to C including English and maths GCSEs. All these schools scored at least 98%, compared with a national average of 42.7%. The final column is the average points per student in all their GCSE-level exams (which we have used as a tie-break). Smaller schools, with fewer than 30 pupils eligible to take the exams, are not ranked. Some independent schools that would feature in this list apparently do very badly on the new measure because students take International GCSEs, which are not recognised in government achievement data.
