I am a physically challenged Ghanaian woman. Does it mean I should be begging by a traffic light in a wheelchair carrying a baby, whose father took advantage of my vulnerability and left me hanging? Or perhaps I should be hidden in a room, out of sight as my physical deformity may be seen as a result of a curse on my family. Alternatively, I could go to all the prayer camps, herbalists and mallams who can perform the 'miracle' and make me whole and normal.
Naah, doesn't work for me, I think I'll just mutter the serenity prayer as I rise up above my disability and become who I want to be; a doctor, lawyer or perhaps a software developer... hmm, can I penetrate such a male-dominated area in a developing African country? I don't see why not, so I walk 'funny' - big deal! I don't need to walk to develop software, do I? I think I'll do that, rise above my physical restrictions and the expectations of my narrow-minded society and become one of the few female software developers in the West African sub-region Can I? Yes I can and I did. Did you? For Farida to win an expense-paid trip to the UK and Bush house - text VOTE WEDNESDAY to +44 77 86 20 50 85 |
