We asked you to submit a short written composition to explain how you identify yourself. Do you identify yourself first and foremost with your family, your ethnic group, your country, your region or your continent? How does that affect the way you behave and the way you see the world?
I was given my grandmother's name, Musonda, at my birth. The name means 'the one who tastes'. I believe that long ago, my name was given to some of my ancestors who went round looking for foods such as wild fruits, vegetables, roots and other things that might be edible. So many died if they tasted poisonous stuff! I am now 28 years of age and believe me or not, all my life I have tried to identify myself with my beautiful name. I don't go around tasting other people's food or anything you might think of like that - my life has been that of savouring the different tastes of life. Currently, I'm studying for the priesthood and it hasn't been that easy, especially because I am an African and celibacy is not appreciated in my culture.
My clansmen expect me to have a big family and leave children behind when I die. Some still think that there is something wrong with me, as they believe that a normal person can't just decide to go against nature. Some think that I have wasted my intelligence as I would have achieved a lot had it not been for my wild dreams. But they forget that I am Musonda, the one who tastes. Like my forefathers and mothers, I am ready to take any challenge in life provided it is worthwhile to me. So, I go around with my head high regardless of whether my life's decisions mean something or nothing to the people around me. I'm so happy that whenever I face any difficulty, I have my strong name to look to. Musonda is who I am.
