Friday 27th July

Yesterday we reported that authorities in the Spanish Canary islands are being urged to close four emergency centres for migrant children from Africa, amid allegations of overcrowding and abuse. Harold & Felix Westwood feel this is one case where the responsibility lies firmly with the parents.

Surely, instead of criticising the centres set up by the Spanish or the alleged roughness of nurses, it would be wiser to damn the families who paid criminals to launch their kids, alone and lost into Europe?

Those irresponsible families and their countries should pay for the return of these poor children!

Thursday 26th July

As today sees the much-awaited swearing in of the new cabinet in Nigeria, Peter Tuach Pal in Ethiopia sends a message of guidance for Nigeria's president, Umaru Yar'adua.

Mr President: today, as you empower your new cabinet to work, give them a good orientation about your policy for leadership in the country and impress upon them the importance of serving the country without any thoughts of corruption in their minds.

You must try to solve the disputes between Muslims and Christians but let them share the same bread equally, as they too share the same land.

If you can do this, I say long live your new government.

Wednesday 25th July

As the opposition in Cameroon cries fowl over the recent elections, Mbecha Terrence in Kumba, Cameroon, adds his voice to the argument.

The Cameroon government may claim that the July 22nd elections were free and fair - I beg to differ.

I am 34 years old and have never taken part in any elections, not because I don't want to but because my name does not feature on the electoral list.

Many Cameroonians seem to have the opportunity to vote as many time as they like, whilst others are not given the opportunity to vote at all.

Tuesday 24th July

Majer Goch Wuoi in Arua, Uganda, writes in response to recent reports from Burundi.

I was shocked when I heard that one of the rebel leaders has rejoined his forces in the bush.

These rebels must know that waging war is not an appropriate measure towards solving their differences with the government. They will simply end up inflicting misery on the very people they claim to be fighting for.

Majer sends words of advice for the rebels.

The international community has been watching the peace process between you and the government, and if the government is not respecting this process, you should raise your concerns with the international community rather than running back to the bush.

Talk is the only way to reach a peaceful settlement - war is useless and destructive.

Monday 23rd July

US President George W Bush temporarily handed over power to his Vice-President while undergoing a routine medical examination. David Lulasa in Uthiru, Kenya does not think this is setting a useful precedent

I find it hypocritical for someone to give out his power just because of a three hour medical check up.

Now what happens when both Bush and Vice President Cheney are fast asleep at night? Do they give out their power to someone else?
