A view of West Wiltshire

The West Wiltshire Show

While east Wiltshire is dominated by downland, the western reaches are built on low-lying pasture land.

Over the years this chalk and cheese difference affected people's lives.

Binoculars bulletBefore the days of refrigeration cheese was the best way of sending dairy products long distance and the pastureland around towns like Trowbridge and Bradford on Avon soon found itself at the centre of an important West Country industry.

To a certain extent, the cheesemaking tradition of West Wiltshire is kept alive by Jenny Gane and her shop in Bradford on Avon.

The Cheese Board started life in the 1990's when in the midst of recession Jenny started up her own business and in many respects defied the odds.

From just one counter, a till and a relatively limited range of cheese on offer, Jenny built up her dairy emporium into what it is today - an Aladdin's cave of meats and cheeses.

While Stinking Bishop and Cornish Yarg may not sound the most romantic way to round off a meal Jenny's cheese counter boasts 200 or so different cheeses to choose from - some would say they are spoilt for choice.

People from all around make a regular pilgrimage to Jenny's shop and with her one-to-one customer service, it seems that they can't get enough of the stuff.

Jenny's family originates from Warminster but she feels now that her heart is firmly in Bradford on Avon.

It is the small market town atmosphere that Jenny says she enjoys.

"We're a close-knit community and everyone supports everyone else"

Roy Ludlow, a headmaster working in Bath lives in the nearby village of Winsley.

As a regular customer to Jenny's cheese shop, he's grown to enjoy the individual service and the huge range of products available.

I think we're all a bit unique in Bradford on Avon

"It makes Bradford a very special town because you can't find shops like this anywhere else."

Roy prefers the quieter pace of life in Bradford on Avon and says that the small West Wiltshire town is the perfect antidote to the working week in Bath.

The varied number of shops and businesses in Bradford on Avon makes the town unique and it still manages to avoid the clutches of the modern-day high street chains.

Jenny Gane is convinced that she owes the success of her cheese shop to the town of Bradford on Avon and the people who live there.

She believes that her kind of shop just wouldn't be a success anywhere else - not even another West Wiltshire town.

"I love Bradford - it's very close community and very supportive. My shop just wouldn't work anywhere else but here!"

The atmosphere generated by Bradford's architecture, landscape, people and independent spirit is the reason why Jenny is happy to smile - without resorting to the need the say "cheese"!
