A funnel cloud is a cone-shaped twisting column of air that extends downwards from the base of a larger cloud without reaching the ground. If it hits the ground, it becomes a tornado; if it hits a body of water it becomes a waterspout.

Funnel clouds usually come from cumulonimbus clouds, meaning that heavy rain, hail, thunder and lightning may be on the way.
