Hailing from Blackburn in Lancashire, Matt spent much of his childhood growing up in Glasgow before heading south, this time to Leeds.
After gaining four A-levels, he departed for Cardiff University where he received a BSc Honours degree.
Having always had a keen interest in all things weather-related, it took little persuasion for Matt to leave his first job in local government and join the Met Office.
His first post, in January 1998, was as an observer based at RAFC Cranwell, in Lincolnshire.
His desire to become a fully-fledged forecaster then led to him doing extra study with the Open University.
From this he gained a place on the Met Office's Initial Forecasting Course and after successful completion he returned to Lincolnshire, this time to RAF Coningsby - forecasting for Tornado pilots, as well as for the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.
His next posting was to the Met Office's commercial office in Cardiff.
In addition to forecasting for various utility companies, Matt got his first experience of radio broadcasting - for BBC Radio Wales and BBC Radio in south-west England.
From here the leap to TV and national radio followed, joining the BBC Weather Centre in 2004.
