1991: Sumos size up the Royal Albert Hall

The first Sumo wrestling tournament held outside of Japan begins on 9 October 1991.

The event took place at the Royal Albert Hall in London as part of an ongoing Japan Festival.

While a regular Sumo tournament (or “Basho”) lasts for 15 days, the UK contest was shortened to just five days.
