1984: Building an International Garden Festival in Liverpool

Blue Peter presenter Simon Groom took his faithful dog Goldie with him to visit the location of the 1984 International Garden Festival which was under construction on derelict land in Liverpool. The large festival site was designed to revitalise tourism in the city and the festival itself ran from May – October of that year.

Simon Groom looked at the festival pavilion and explored the locations of various international gardens, before launching a competition for Blue Peter viewers to design a garden of their own, to be created as part of the festival.

This Clip from Blue Peter was originally broadcast on 9 January 1984.
