Day Two: Cardiff

A warm Cardiff welcome ensured that the BBC Bus had a fantastic day in Wales.

Even driver Ken and producer Jamie were smiling as a magic piece of wire made sure that the BBC Bus could beam the findings of our mission back home.

Paul and Ian made friends with the people of Cardiff, including some traffic wardens who paid us an unexpected visit with ticket books in hand!

Cheryl and Ian Pringle
Cheryl and Ian Pringle from Ponteland checked out what Cardiff had to offer

Our Radio Newcastle snoopers Cheryl and Ian Pringle also enjoyed their first visit to the shortlisted city.

Their verdict: "Cardiff is smaller and more compact than Newcastle but it is worthy of being shortlisted. There is plenty of development going on in the area but it is still in the early stages for this competition".

Colette Adams
Colette thinks Newcastle Gateshead is "simply the best"

Colette Hume is the Education Correspondent for BBC Wales, but originally comes from the North East and is backing the Newcastle Gateshead bid.

"It is simply the best place in the world" she says, "the people, the atmosphere and of course, the blinking bridge".

Next stop in Broad Street, Oxford. Let's hope we find a city that is just as welcoming as Cardiff.

Cardiff facts

Cardiff is Europe's youngest capital city.

The first £1m cheque was signed in Cardiff

Like Newcastle, Cardiff was once the centre of the coal mining industry. Recent developments in the city include the Millennium Stadium - the only stadium with a retractable roof in the UK.
