BUKI: Italy is the home of pizza. And it comes in hundreds of varieties.
Roman pizza is special, because it has a thin, crispy base and it's totally yummy.
Because we love it so much, we've decided to come and find out exactly how to make it.
CHEF: Buona sera, signorine! Siete qua per fare la pizza?
BUKI AND ELAINE: Sì.
CHEF: Buona sera. Salve.
BUKI: Mettiamo un grembiule. E un cappello.
Farina. Lievito. That's yeast. Sale. Olio di oliva. Acqua.
They say it's the Roman water that makes their pizzas so incredibly delicious.
CHEF: Hai visto bene? Adesso… Basta.
BUKI: We have to knead the dough. Impastare.
CHEF: Dai. Forza, forza, forza!
Mettilo vicino a questo e abbiamo finito. Guardate.
BUKI: He makes it look so easy.
CHEF: Andiamo! Così! Forza! Così, così! Così va bene.
Pomodoro. Formaggio. Che vuoi sulla pizza?
ELAINE: Io preferirei un uovo.
CHEF: Cosa vuoi sulla pizza?
BUKI: Olive.
CHEF: Pronti.
BUKI: To make sure our pizzas are super crispy the chef puts more wood in the oven. Il forno a legna.
ELAINE: Wow, they're ready.
BUKI: Now it's time for the judging. Which pizza will the chef think is the tastiest?
CHEF: E buona. Come si chiama questa pizza?
BUKI: Pizza Buki.
CHEF: Buki?
BUKI: Buki
So, what does he think? Which is the best?
CHEF: Non posso decidere. Sono tutte e due buone.
BUKI: He thinks they're both delicious. Let's see what my family thinks.
Cosa ne pensi?
BUKI'S SISTER: Buonissima!
BUKI: It's fun making pizza. But it's even more fun eating it.
Buki and her friend learn how to make Roman pizza from an Italian chef, including baking it in the wood oven.
Which pizza does the chef think is best?
This clip is from the BBC2 series, Being Italian.
Teacher Notes
- This clip could be used to introduce the topic of food in a cross-curricular way, linking Italian, Design and Technology (preparing food and teaching cooking skills), Healthy eating, Numeracy and Literacy.
- Teachers could initiate a discussion about what typical food originates from the countries represented in the class and then move on to talking about the typical foods of Italy. The teacher can provide pupils with food items before watching the clip and ask them to prepare their cooking space, placing all items in the order that they are named in the clip.
- Pupils will then check with peers and teacher, and discuss the process of making pizza using a recipe and measuring quantities.
- Pupils can also practise vocabulary and sentences by asking and providing each other with the toppings they like, using the question ‘What would you like on your pizza? - Cosa vuoi sulla pizza?’
