DANIEL: This is Circo Massimo. Back in ancient times, the Romans came here to watch sports and chariot racing.
It held over a quarter of a million spectators. Now it's sometimes used for concerts and events.
But the Romans still love to come here and play all kinds of games. It's an amazing place to play Frisbee.
While I love playing Frisbee, my favourite sport is football: il calcio.
I come here and train three times a week. And many players from this club have gone on to become professional footballers.
Come and meet the team: la squadra. And find out who they support.
BOY 1: Ciao, sono Tommaso. Faccio l'attaccante. Tifo la Roma.
ANDREA: Sono Andrea. Faccio il centrocampista. Tifo per la Juve.
IACOPO: Mi chiamo Iacopo. Sono difensore. Tifo Lazio.
DANIEL: Ciao. Sono Daniel. Sono il portiere. Tifo per l'Arsenal.
COACH: Allora, Gianmaria, difensore. Matteo, al centrocampo.
Mi raccomando corri e gira il pallone. Lorenzo, fai l'attacante.
Non fare tutto da solo.Cerca di fare gol. Allora, Daniel.
Tu, in porta, mi raccomando. Dai, andiamo in campo. Forza!
DANIEL: Time for the match: la partita.
Quanto è veloce!
Quel ragazzo è troppo bravo!
COACH: Cambio.
DANIEL: Bravissimo, Daniel!
Fallo! Oh no! It's a penalty! Un rigore.
Che fortuna! It's hit the post: il palo. So what's the score? Let's ask the referee: l'arbitro.
COACH: Quanto è finita?
BOY 1: E finita 2-1 per noi.
COACH: 2-1.
BOY 2: No, mister, abbiamo vinto 3-1!
COACH: 3-1?
BOY 3: Ma che dici? È finita 2-2!
COACH: Due a due? Quindi, quanto è finita?
DANIEL: I'm sure we won. Abbiamo vinto!
Daniel and his friends enjoy playing frisbee in the Circo Massimo in Rome, but what he loves most is training with his football team after school.
We find out what positions he and his friends play, which teams they support, meet their coach, and follow a practice match.
This clip is from the BBC2 series, Being Italian.
Teacher Notes
This clip could be used as a starting point for comparing games played in different countries, including their history. This could lead to discussion of ‘national games’ and the importance of these in their respective countries.
This could equally be set as a research activity for small groups who subsequently report their findings to the class.
