JOE:Mum, I forgot my English homework!
JOE'S MUM:And?

JOE'S MUM:What am I a taxi service?
JOE:Mum please.
JOE'S MUM:You're just as bad as him you are. Oh just take it in tomorrow.
JOE:Please mum! Mum?
DREW:Right, you will not all charge out at the sound of the bell. You will pack your things away quietly and wait to be dismissed. And thank you for your homework… Those who've done it. Mr Brimmer? A notable absence from my homework pile. Would you care you elaborate on that?
JOE:I'm sorry sir. I did it but I forgot it.
DREW:He did it but he forgot it, ladies and gents.
JOE:I did do it sir!
DREW:Now, the first two weeks of term I promised no detentions and I stood by that promise did I not? But you're not kids anymore… Are you Mr Brimmer? So unless you can give me a good reason? Ten past three then Mr Brimmer. Our first casualty I'm afraid.

JOE:I'm at the shopping centre!
KEIRON:Why aren’t you at the school? How did you get out?
JOE:Ah I went through the football pitch. Are you really gonna leave home?

MISS KAHN:OK.
JOE:So I went shopping centre. But my brother, he took me back.
MISS KAHN:And did you tell Mr Drew about your brother, Joe? And about why you forgot your homework?
JOE:He never liked my brother either Miss, he hated him.
MISS KAHN:OK, well listen? I'm gonna have a word with Mr Drew OK? I'll let him know what's been going on. And then next week, maybe you and I can get together again and see how you're finding things? OK?
JOE:Alright Miss.
MISS KAHN:And In the meantime I don't want you to worry about your brother, Joe. And I don't want you to worry about Mr Drew? Because you have a wonderful future waiting for you here at this school. And I can help you make that happen.
MISS KAHN:Alright?
JOE:Yeah.
MISS KAHN:Good man.
JOE:Sir?
DREW:Mr Brimmer.
JOE:I've got the homework sir, my brother brought it in for me.
DREW:Very good! However… Late means late. And If everyone else can manage to bring it in on time then why make an exception for you, eh? Take a seat.
JOE:I don't want to be here, school just causes problems. My brother never went, why should I have to? What should I do?

Teacher Notes
Students could be asked to identify the instances of conflict in this clip.
They could explore the causes of the conflict and how Joe felt during this time.
Challenge students to use this clip to discuss ways to deal with and resolve conflict in school, and at home.
Students could be organised into groups and each assigned one of these conflict situations to explore in greater detail.
Most students are likely to be on Joe’s side in each of these conflicts and will have a good understanding of how he felt, but they should also explore the conflict from the other person’s point of view by stepping into their shoes.
What are their reasons behind the argument? How are they feeling?
Students could then note the need to work together when resolving conflict.
They could brainstorm solutions from both points of view.
Students could then role-play each of these conflict situations but this time try to find a resolution.
Alternatively, students could explore how they can find support in their own school if they are experiencing problems at home.
Students could identify members of staff whom they can talk to, and the type of support that could be offered.
Students could design posters to encourage others to talk to a teacher if they experiencing any kinds of problems.
This clip will be relevant for teaching PSHE and Modern Studies at KS2 in England and Northern Ireland, PSE at KS2 in Wales and First Level and Second Level in Scotland.
