CHAZ:It said it on my timetable, "drama studio".
OLDER FEMALE STUDENT:Will you year sevens watch where you're going yeah?!

JOE:You looked Scared!
DRAMA TEACHER:OK, thank you everyone. Right, Chaz, Julie, off you go.
CHAZ:You alright Jules?
JULIE:Oh hi.
CHAZ:I was thinking like, do you wanna go ice skating or something after school?
JULIE:Well, my mum said I've gotta go straight home, So…
CHAZ:So what!
JULIE:Cause I gotta do work.
CHAZ:Mate, why you giving us the shoulder for?
GROUP LAUGHTER
JULIE:What? Get the bus, by ourselves? All the way to the ice rink?
CHAZ:Yeah.
JULIE:My mum would never let me do that!
CHAZ:Of course she will. It's secondary school now, you can do what you want!
JULIE:No, I can't.
GROUP LAUGHTER
DRAMA TEACHER:Ok yeah, let's leave it there a round of applause I think chaps. Thank you. Very good.

DRAMA TEACHER:OK so thoughts, questions? What was going on there? Yeah Johanne?
JOHANNE:See the guy yeah? He just wanted to do something with his friend. But he was being bare keen!
DRAMA TEACHER:Yeah very good! Umm Julie not sure what her mum's going to think so what can he do in that situation? What can he do, do you think? Yeah, Shanice.
SHANICE:I think he should just like, let her go home? Because her mum is gonna be well mad?
DRAMA TEACHEROK.
SHANICE:But, like, the next day he should be like, "Oh, what are you doing at lunch time?" Or, "What are you doing after school?" or something like that?
DRAMA TEACHER:OK, very good. Excellent work everyone, thank you! What I want everyone to do please, is on your way out could you collect a script? Because next week we're going to be doing some written text. Yeah?
CHAZ:Err sir, can we stay in the same pairs please?
DRAMA TEACHER:Yeah that’s fine.

JOE:Yes mate, you smacked it!
CHAZ:Yeah.

Now he is at secondary school, the support structures Chaz had at primary school for his reading difficulties aren't there.
He loves the new drama opportunities offered at secondary school and all goes well until he has to prepare a reading from a script.
He struggles and his dad isn't much help.
A major embarrassment in front of the class brings his reading difficulty to a head and Chaz ponders what to do.

Teacher Notes
Pupils could be asked to share things they find difficult at school.
This could be done anonymously on scraps of paper.
Ask pupils to produce a word shower of how the difficulties make them feel.
After watching the clip, discuss what Chaz should do.
Ask pupils to write him an email telling him about their own difficulties at school as well as offering advice on what to do to help with his reading.
This clip will be relevant for teaching PSHE and Modern Studies at KS2 in England and Northern Ireland, PSE at KS2 in Wales and First Level and Second Level in Scotland.
