A group of children from Berlin who play in a band called Neon Monsters are celebrating Karneval in Berlin.
We see them play day-glo mini golf whilst singing a song which introduces German vocabulary for playing games.
This short film is from the BBC series, Virtually There: Germany.
In this series of short fun films, a British boy practices German by talking to a group of children in Berlin via a tablet. Virtually There: Germany revises basic German vocabulary in a series of real-life settings, and using memorable songs.
Teacher Notes
Pupils could be asked to form groups and practise and perform the chorus.
The song could be used to introduce the idea of Karneval:
What is the origin of the word Karneval?
How is it celebrated in Germany? Where else is it celebrated in Europe?
Pupils can research 'counting in/out' rhymes in German, and practice playing games and using phrases such as 'Ich bin dran'.
Support pronunciation by practising phonemes [o:] o in 'rot' and [aʊ] au in 'blau'.
Curriculum Notes
This film could be used for teaching German at KS2 or at a beginner level in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and 2nd Level or beginner level in Scotland.
