Charlie calls his friend Moritz in Berlin, who is buying a snack of currywurst at his favourite sausage stall.
Charlie then talks to Annika and Jens, who are making kebabs with everything they can find in the fridge.
They come up with some unusual combinations, and tell Charlie what foods they like and don’t like.
Charlie makes his own favourite kebab at home; cheese and chocolate.
This short film focuses on German phrases for buying fast food, food vocabulary and expressing likes and dislikes.
It also introduces the idea of making long compound nouns. It is from the BBC series, Virtually There: Germany.
In this series of short fun films, a British boy practices German by talking to a group of children in Berlin via a tablet. Virtually There: Germany revises basic German vocabulary in a series of real-life settings, and using memorable songs.
Teacher Notes
You could use this film alongside flashcards to reinforce food vocabulary in German.
Support pronunciation by practising the phonemes [ø] ö in 'Brötchen' and [y] ä in 'Käse'.
Also highlight ß in 'Spieße'. Point out that ß is also written as ss.
Pupils could be asked to write a list of ingredients for their own kebabs, and look up new ingredients in a bi-lingual dictionary.
Pupils could also draw their own kebab and write labels for the different ingredients, or even make a real one in class.
Role play buying a hot dog or other fast food in Germany.
Support understanding of grammar by highlighting German word order in the question: 'Du schon mal eine Berliner Currywurst gegessen?' Jens’ very long kebab name can be used to introduce the idea of compound nouns in German.
Pupils can practise expressing likes and dislikes: 'Ich hasse Oliven', 'Ich liebe Ananas'.
They can compare the different things you buy at fast food stalls in Germany and the UK.
Curriculum Notes
These short films could be used for teaching German at KS2 or at a beginner level in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and 2nd Level or beginner level in Scotland.
