Kelly Groucutt & Parthenon Huxley

ELO Part II

This resurrected version (now known as The Orchestra: Electric Light Orchestra Part II Former Members) came to Suffolk without mainman Jeff Lynne or indeed their flying saucer. I made the discovery that they can still cut it without either.

For someone who attended the Out Of The Blue ELO concert at Wembley Arena in the late 70's, arguably one of the most celebrated concerts in modern rock history, I approached The Regent with a certain trepidation.

Was this going to be a very pale imitation performed by a cast of old-timers endeavouring to supplement their imminent pensions? The new line-up consists of Kelly Groucutt (bass guitar and vocals) and Mik Kaminski (violin) from the original group. They're joined by strings' arranger Louis Clark (moving from behind the scenes onto the stage), Eric Troyer (keyboards, vocals and occasional guitar), Parthenon Huxley (lead guitar and vocals) and Gordon Townsend (drums).

Electric Light Orchestra

Mik Kaminski

Any worries I had very quickly dissipated as they took to the stage to a rapturous welcome from the sell-out audience.

The hits from yesteryear were belted out from the first moment. Evil Woman was the opener and the audience was singing along from the off.

Living Thing, Showdown (Mik Kaminski's opening solo on that legendary blue violin sent a shiver down my back), Ma Ma Belle, Rockaria .... were it not for the fact that the majority of those attending were quadraginarians and over, we would all have been on our feet four tracks in.

Well written records will stand the test of time, providing they are delivered with a high level of musical expertise of course, and this is exactly what ELO Part 2 possesses, in bundles. Indeed they compare very favourably in this department with the original group.

Kaminski is even better, Groucutt is a performer par excellence and, free from 'big brother' Jeff Lynne's presence, he led proceedings from centre-stage with humour and confidence. I thought the three transatlantic additions to the group delivered high quality musicianship throughout.

Electric Light Orchestra

The Orchestra (ELO Part II former members)

Troyer is just as talented on the keyboards as the erstwhile Richard Tandy and he possesses the added bonus of a splendid alto voice, helping to deliver the famous ELO harmonies. Whether by accident or design Hux's singing voice is very similar to Jeff Lynne's, while he proved to be a superb lead guitarist.

Gordon Townsend offered a masterclass of drumming, which, and I never thought I'd say it, even the legendary Bev Bevan would have been proud of.

The hits just kept on coming: Sweet Talking Woman, Hold On Tight, Standing In The Rain, Mr. Blue Sky and Roll Over Beethoven in particular bringing the proverbial house down. It wasn't all memories, as a new track Brave New Boy and Girl was delivered with consummate skill by Hux, as was Eric Troyer's arrangement of Twist and Shout.

Simon Warr - That'll Teach 'Em

The audience applauded and applauded at the conclusion and the group just had to return for an encore, offering us that thunderous number Don't Bring Me Down. After this master show it will be a long time before anyone can bring down ELO Part 2.

Alright, they could be called ELO Just 2, but I would strongly recommend anyone with a liking of good, clean rock to try and catch them, even if you missed ELO the first time around.

I overheard a 20-something woman on the way out, saying that it was the best rock concert that she had been to: she, of course, did not attend that Wembley extravaganza in the 70s.

Andy Sussex
Absolutely ! Saw them in Oxford and they were fantastic. It was like being back in the '70 for the night. Just got the very sad news that Kelly Groucutt passed away in February, can't believe that, real shame.

LESLEY RICH
HAVE SEEN THEM QUITE A FEW TIMES,BUT SAW THEM IN SALISBURY AND THEY WERE JUST FABULOUS,WHAT A SUPERB NIGHT WE HAD. I LOST MY VOICE DUE TO ALL THE SINGING,(MUCH TO MY HUSBANDS DELIGHT!!)REALLY HOPE THEY COME BACK AGAIN SOON,CAN'T WAIT TO SEE THEM AGAIN.

VIVIEN PRINCE
I SAW ORCHESTRA LAST NIGHT IN BRENTWOOD, AND IT WAS THE BEST THING I HAVE SEEN SINCE SEEING ELO AT WEMBLEY IN THE EIGHTIES. THE HAIRS STOOD UP ON MY HEAD ALL THE WAY THROUGH, AND EVEN MY 25 YEAR OLD WHO HAS NEVER SEEN THEM, BUT GREW UP WITH THEIR MUSIC, LOVED EVERY MINUTE. I CAN ONLY HOPE THEY WILL COME BACK NEXT YEAR

Adele from Todmorden
My husband has been an ELO fan since his teens so took him to see part 2 at the opera house in Manchester a couple of years ago. I could tell he was nervous thinking they wouldn't be that good compared to the originals. He needn't have worried they were fantastic from start to finish! What a talented group of guys who were enjoying themselves as much as the rest of us. They produced such a great sound and chose some of the best tracks to peform.I want to take our children next time as we've made them fans too!

Geoff Pinder from Hull
I saw ELO Prt 2 in Hull, way back in 1994 (The Moment of Truth tour - and my very first Live gig) and I was blown away by them then - as a 14 year old! They've got such professionalism, love and quality in what they do that they deserve all the praise they get. I'm having great difficulty finding The Orchestra's "No Rewind" album in the shops though! Can anybody help?

Tony from Bury
Saw ELO pt2 in Manchester in May.Thought they might be an average rendition band of ELO. I was completely wrong and can say out of all the gigs I have been to over last 30 years this was by far one of the best and entertaining I have been to.It made the imaginary hairs on my bald head stand on edge again at the supurb sound and melody produced on the stage.I look forward to their visit up here again.

Simone
Saw ELO part 2 in Halifax on 8th April and they didn't disappoint. Didn't think they'd be able to pull every number off live but they did! Next time I'll take my kids - I know my son will appreciate the musical talent of these guys, v professional and obviously take their craft seriously. Great to see them around and I'm just sorry my dad isn't here to see them too - it was because of him that I got hooked on Mr Blue Sky and Horace Wimp. They're classic and need to publicise a bit more so others don't miss out - I'm sure they are one group that still appeal to most.

2/4/08. saw orchestra at sundereland empire brilliant show, has everyone rocking from start- end. good to see phil back, seen 5 times over the years and last nights was the best yet.hope they come back to north east soon, a must for everyone to see

sharon East Riding of Yorkshire
Hubby, myself and our 15 yr old son went to them at the Grand Opera House, York last night (30.3.08) It was my 4th ELO concert and as usually it was fantastic and I was up bopping away almost straight away. As usual they gave the audience a fantastic night with a great mix of songs from the albums . Eric's voice is wonderful , the updated version of midnight blue was outstanding, as was their Twist on The Twist!Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their night - including my sceptical son. If you get the opportunity to see then - don't let is pass you by.

Pete
I went to see The Orchestra a few weeks ago for my 18th birthday, yeah I was the youngest person there, but so what, it was awesome! I'd also like to point out the song isn't "Brave New Boy and Girl" it's called "Jewel and Johnny".

kevin jacobs
quite agree they are a super group as good now as they were in the seventies probably better, timeless classics sung with quality and fun, if you havent seen them go now

Jihad Wetherill Pk. Sydney, Australia
In late '79 I saw an ad on t.v for the Discovery and the first greatest hits albums, and at the age of 13,I thought a 'rock' band with cellos and violins was odd. What drew me to ELO was the side-2 of the Xanadu album, which of course is ELO.This started me off on the road of inquiry, of who these guys are.Since then,I've driven family members to friends, totally mad, by constantly playing their music, or playing my drums to their music. After all these years,my fondest memories are attached to their music. These days,I've got my children hooked on,Yes, you've guest it, ELO.I just wish that they could come 'Down Under' to Australia one last time

Christine Johnson
They are the best rock band, great talents, hope they come to Grimsby again soon

Ken Smollen
ELO.....Fantastic

Rob, South Wales
I've been going to see 'part 2' since around 1992, met them a couple of times for autogragh signing, really nice guys. I agree with all comments, they are great live. Did get the chance to see original ELO with Jeff on two occassions in 1986, & on stage they sound just as good now as they did then. I just hope they keep touring (& hopefully release a follow up CD)If you know anyone who appreciates good music played really well live, take them along to an 'Orchestra'gig, they'll not be disappointed !

Darren, Southampton
My Dad and I went to see ELO II in Portsmouth last year. There we're absolutely fantastic. I also went to Girls Aloud later in the year and they were rubbish compared to ELO II and Girls Aloud played in a much bigger venue raking in so much more money. You have to wonder what people see in Girls Aloud that they don't see in ELO II??

Gemma, Wales
Me and My friend attended a ELO part II concert in Cardiff. We really enjoyed it but we were gutted that Partheron was not there. We really loved it...Keep it up guys, hope you come again real soon!

Derek Ohillips
I recently attended the concert in edinburgh. As mentioned in one of the above reviews they were brilliant, for a band the origionated way back in 1970 you'de think they would be running out of steam but the energy expended by kelly was just brill!!!!. Great music just keeps on coming on and on. KEEP IT UP CHAPS

Mark Lennie, Edinburgh
I was at there concert at Edinburgh Playhouse on 24/6 and it was the 2nd time i saw them since 1998 and the sell-out crowd was singing from the off that at times you could hear them well above Kelly's vocals Even the local Edinburgh Evening News gave them a well deserved ***** rating. When they finished the gig a screaming audience did not need to tell them they put a fantastic show on. I met them afterwards at the stage door and told the band members not to leave it as long before they visit Edinburgh or at least Scotland again. I recommend anyone who has not seen the show to go along as you won't be disappointed.

dave and sarah from newark.
This was a seriously brilliant performace.Having been a huge fan in the 70,s ..thirty years on we were not dissapointed at all...brill..vocals,insruments the whole picture. and an amazing mish mash of ages..from at least 14 up to about 70..ELO you rock...xxxxx

Glenda of Manchester
Went to see ELO in Manchester in May 06 they were absolutely brilliant. This sell out concert made the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end.

Tony Le Blanc
I saw this Gig on Saturday at the Anvil Basingstoke. The show was great and my wife (a Elosceptic) confessed that she thoroughly enjoyed the evening. It was well worth the trip from Alderney, Channel Islands

Lisa Harrop of Poole
I have happy childhood memories of this groups music, as my dad was always playing their albums. So I took my dad to see them and wow!!! they were just fantatstic!!!

james easter
Absolutely on the money. A truly memorable concert with arrangements so tight that the musical elastic nearly broke. Good music will always remain a quality product and will stay the test of time. I wonder how many of this year's "pap" will be remembered in 30 years time in the way that ELO's music will long remain in our souls. Truly a superb concert

karen of sudbury
fantastic review, im 37,this was the first time ive seen them, blew me away, great show guys!
