The Open

The Open's new album has recieved rave reviews from the press but can they cut it live in Ipswich?

Support act, Brendan Luke Ware's style is classic of an acoustic performer, he mixes up soft and powerful chords with a mellow voice that's crying out for attention. His music is mesmerizing and he really grabbed the audiences full attention with a good balance of guitar and vocals. He seemed nervous on the large stage, his legs shaking and feet tapping.

The Open

CORD were next up on stage, looking confident to blow everyone away, and that they did, receiving a huge cheer with the first song. Three songs into the set we were given an apology, not for any problems with the marvelous music but for them being from Norwich! We forgave them though as they played some electrifying music. Lead man James changing from one song to another playing guitar and keys, fluctuating his unique voice with the rest of the bands melodies.

The Open kick-start their performance with the epic, ‘Forever’ the band had the crowd wondering about where the song would lead to next. The whimpering trumpet and picking of guitar strings transformed into dreamy repetitive vocals and bass, the songs often leading to frantic drumming towards the end.

Other songs had a more mainstream sound, being reminiscent of such bands like Radiohead and the Doves, but no less enjoyable. Often I felt that this could easily have been an act that would follow Oasis. It sounds funny I know, but half the crowd looked like the Gallagher brothers!

All in all an excellent gig, not normally my style of music but I really enjoyed it. The crowd gave a great response, so hopefully The Open, CORD and Brendan Luke Ware can walk away to the next gig happy bunnies.

‘Statues’ the new album by The Open is available in shops now.
