Restoration: the search is on

Griff Rhys Jones
Across the UK thousands of our historic buildings are at risk of being lost.

Across the UK thousands of our historic buildings are at risk of being lost. BBC Two’s Restoration, which campaigns for endangered buildings, is making a new series and this time is specifically looking for buildings that are located within or near to villages. On their behalf, as a seasoned conservationist campaigner myself, I’m asking you to suggest buildings that are in danger of being lost to your community.

The Restoration team wants to hear about places you care about; buildings that once played a part in the life of where you live, and could have a useful life again. It could be a shop, a house, a civic building, or even an industrial building.

The buildings must fill certain criteria and these are:-

1. The building must be of significant architectural or historical interest, but doesn’t have to be listed.

2. The building should be owned by a trust, charity, local authority, public body OR a private owner who would, if the building won Restoration, be prepared to lease or gift the building to one of these groups.

3. There must be a plan, or the strong sense of a plan, for the future use of the building, with a strong emphasis on public access.

4. The building must be considered to be at risk.

5.The buildings cannot be in a city or town but should be in a village, hamlet or rural setting.

Millions of viewers, and thousands of hands-on campaigners, attracted to the Restoration series demonstrates that the historic buildings people encounter in their daily lives matter greatly to them. Every historic building has a wealth of tales to tell and with the help of architectural experts Ptolemy Dean, Marianne Suhr, (and campaigners who care about the building), Restoration could present a compelling case for a building you nominate to be saved and given the chance of a new life by winning the Restoration Fund.

The series is due to return to TV screens in Summer 2006, but the team needs your suggestions now. If you have a building in mind, do have a close look at the criteria the series works to and get in touch with them as soon as possible.

Their contact details are: buildings@endemoluk.com or Restoration, Endemol UK, Shepherds Building Central, Charecroft Way, London W14 0EE.

Please include background information, contact and pictures. We’d like to reply to everyone but forgive us if this is not possible.
