| | Exam time is fast approaching for pupils in Staffordshire, and as any parent or carers knows the run up to this time of year can be extremely stressful for everyone in the family.
During 2001 8% of calls to national charity Parentline Plus' helpline concerned school work issues and the charity expect to see a surge in these calls as exam time edges closer.
To help ease tension Parentline Plus has put together some top tips for parents to help them cope and support their children during exam time.
"Children may feel under pressure from people at school and home when it comes to exams and the prospect of being tested can be overwhelming, especially if they feel they haven't done enough" said Dorit Braun Chief Executive at Parentline Plus.
"Parents may watch their children struggling and be desperate to help but think themselves powerless to do so."
Continues Braun "Callers to our helpline have expressed concerns about finding a balance between wanting their children to do well in exams and not putting too much pressure and discomfort on them."
The good news for parents is that they can help their children at this time of year and the Parentline Plus tips offer advice on how to do so. The top tips include:
* There are very few things in life in which you only get one chance and exams aren't one of them. Reassure children that if they do flunk this time, they can always re-sit.
* Arrange their and your schedules around revision. Be lenient about chores and untidiness, give them a break and understand lost tempers and moodiness.
* It's never too late to study, revise or ask for help
* You might not understand the details of their work, but you can help them plan it
* Bribes or presents conditional on getting high grades aren't the best way to help young people. It's far better to encourage them to work for their own to work for their own satisfaction and schedule small and frequent rewards for effort.
Parents and carers wanting more information and/or support can call Parentline Plus' confidential free helpline on 0808 800 2222, or go to the website www.parentlineplus.org.uk
So, it's seconds out, eyes down, whatever cliché you want to use to begin. Either way, we hope to have some useful tips along the way from you, whether you are a parent, teacher or student, too. Email us with your advice. |
