The Bethesda Chapel

Hanley's Bethesda Chapel

Hanley

It's outdone the other five towns of Stoke-on-Trent as the proudly labelled 'city centre'. Hanley has some fine offerings including the Potteries Museum and Art Gallery.

Funky Facts about Hanley...

Did you know that Hanley's Potteries Museum and Art Gallery is home to a world class ceramics collection (it's a very important museum!) - and a restored Spitfire.

It was also the only one of the six towns to be a county borough before the merge of the six towns; its status was transferred to the enlarged borough.

Hanley

The city's 'Cultural Quarter' in Hanley includes The Regent Theatre, the Museum, the Victoria Hall, BBC Radio Stoke... and lots of restaurants!
But its cinemas are all gone now - to Etruria.

The 'Cathedral of the Potteries' is the district's Bethesda Chapel. Sadly the once-fine building is in dire need of more repair, and is now empty. A Trust is attempting to restore it.
Hanley's other great church, St John's, has gone the same way.

Some of Your Comments

Lots of people thought that the local government 18-storey former headquarters, the 240-foot-high 'Unity House', built in the mid-1970s near Broad Street, was one of Hanley's eyesores, and that it was a great day when it was pulled down!
