| Thursday, 4 July, 2002, 16:17 GMT 17:17 UK Serena makes final a family affair It will be Williams v Williams in the Wimbledon final S Williams (2) beat A Mauresmo (9) 6-2 6-1 Serena Williams will meet her sister Venus in the Wimbledon singles final on Saturday after brushing aside Amelie Mauresmo in the semi. Williams celebrated American Independence Day with a straight sets victory over the ninth seed to set up a mouthwatering second Grand Slam final in a row against her older sibling. In the French Open Serena won but Venus will be tough to beat this time as she closes in on a third Wimbledon title.
Williams, who became the world number one with her semi-final win, raced through the first set in 23 minutes, breaking Mauresmo's serve twice in the process. Mauresmo had started off brightly easily holding serve in her first two games. But the rest of the set passed in a blur as Williams won the next five games with powerful serving and precision shots. It was more of the same in the second set with Mauresmo having no answer to the totally focused Williams. Mauresmo tried to fight back, saving seven break points in one game, but it was simply delaying the inevitable and she succumbed in an easy fashion. Afterwards Williams said: "No-one was going to beat me today. I was immaculate. Today I was unbelievable." Asked about playing her sister in the final, she added: "I'm just going to go out there and have fun." |
