Lleyton Hewitt admits he would not care if he never won another tournament after his Wimbledon triumph.

The Australian champion said on Monday his victory had taken some time to sink in - although that had not tempered his celebrations.

"If I don't win another tournament again, it won't matter," he said, revealing he spent Sunday night with "a few mates and a few beers" in west London.

He added: "It is starting to sink in now. Yesterday everything was a little bit unclear, it is a hard thing to describe.

"I've only just started believing it and realising it actually happened.

"You dream about winning this tournament. They don't come any bigger than Wimbledon."

Hewitt said he was tremendously honoured to join the prestigious list of Wimbledon winners - although he added he was not entirely smitten with all the traditions of SW19.

"To be a member of the All England Club is great. I don't know if I will be wearing the club tie, though. I haven't worn a tie since I was at school!"

Yet Hewitt's name will be engraved underneath those of Sampras, Becker, McEnroe and all the other greats on the trophy that he described as "a great piece of gold".

The final was, as Hewitt said "unique" given that there was not a single serve and volley in the whole match.

"I think I tried to once but I served a fault," joked Hewitt.

To be fair to Nalbandian, he did not show the sort of form that he had produced in previous rounds.

Nalbandian, overwhelmed in straight sets, paid tribute to his opponent.

"He's strong, he's fast, and if you make just one mistake he'll take it," he said.

Hewitt's victory was made easier by the surprise defeats of the likes of Marat Safin, Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras in his half of the draw.

But on this form, you have to wonder whether anyone would have been able to live with him.

He now has the chance to write his name in the annals of the sport on a level footing with the likes of Agassi and Sampras.

This is Hewitt's second Grand Slam title - at the same age Sampras had won just one, while Agassi had yet to get off the mark.

And he had an ominous warning for his rivals when asked about how good he can become.

"To dominate tennis like Tiger Woods has dominated golf would be amazing," he said, referring to his sporting hero.
