Martina takes swipe at BBC
Navratilova volleys during her mixed doubles match against Kournikova and Bjorkman
Navratilova says Richardson showed no respect
Martina Navratilova has criticised the BBC for broadcasting their controversial interview with Anna Kournikova.

The Russian took exception to some of the questioning by BBC interviewer Garry Richardson following her first-round defeat to compatriot Tatiana Panova.

There's nothing wrong with the attention she's brought to the game
Navratilova leaps to Kournikova's defence

The BBC later showed the whole interview, prompting their pundit and former player John Lloyd to brand Kournikova "pathetic".

But Navratilova has stood up for Kournikova, accusing the media of pursuing a sexist agenda against some of the more high-profile female players.

"When the guy was asking her about her match she didn't like it so she walked. She started the interview again," said the nine-times Wimbledon singles champion.

"Then he says to her, okay, well you lost your match today, how was your day?

"Would he say that to Pete Sampras after he just lost a match? Never, ever.

"You do not treat men the same way as you treat women.

Anna Kournikova says sorry for hitting an opponent
Kournikova has been positive for tennis, says Navratilova
"The guy showed no respect for her as a human being, never mind as a tennis player. That was just a nasty way, I think."

Kournikova has come under fire for seemingly putting her life off the court ahead of her tennis career.

But Navratilova insisted the Russian was a positive influence on the game.

"I don't think she's really courted attention, certainly not as much in the last couple of years," said the American.

"I believe she has been very serious about trying to become a better tennis player and I believe the results will come.

"Anna has created a whole new market out there on the women's tour, a whole new base of fans who want to come and see her play.

"There's nothing wrong with the attention she's brought to the game.

"She's not the one taking pictures of herself and putting them on page three."
