| Tuesday, 25 June, 2002, 22:12 GMT 23:12 UK Bogdanovic bows out Bogdanovic was the youngest player in the men's draw Alex Bogdanovic made a brave attempt to become the fourth British man into the second round before falling in four sets to France's Nicolas Escude. The 18-year-old, the youngest player in the men's draw, was on top in the early stages but eventually lost 4-6 6-4 6-4 6-4. It was another appalling day for the British women. If Elena Baltacha had not beaten Venezuelan Maria Vento-Kabchi, Britain would not have had one representative in the women's second round for the first time in history.
Of the 13 Britons handed wildcards only two - Baltacha and Barry Cowan - have made it through to the last 64. Tim Henman, who beat Jean-Francois Bachelot 6-1 6-3 6-2, and Monday winners Cowan and Greg Rusedski are the three British men through. The other British man in action on Tuesday, Alan Mackin, lost 7-6 (7/5) 6-3 6-3 to young Finnish contender Jarkko Nieminen. Bogdanovic felt that he could have won his match but was pleased to have finally experienced the Wimbledon atmosphere. "At the start of the second, if I'd just stepped up a little more and had more belief in myself - I think he was carrying an injury - maybe he could have pulled out or something," he said. Battling victory "I had a chance, and it was a great opportunity to go out there and to play in such a great atmosphere. "I can really learn a lot from that." After Baltacha, ranked 295 in the world, beat Vento-Kabchi 6-4 6-4 to move into the last 64 she joked that her victory had "saved the day". She was nearly joined by fellow 18-year-old Anne Keothavong, who lost 6-3 7-6 (7/5) to world 99 Virginie Razzano of France, a player ranked 191 places above her. Of the other British women in action Jane O'Donoghue managed to win two games against world number one Venus Williams, while Rachel Viollet managed one less against Maggie Maleeva. Hannah Collin lost 6-1 6-7 (1/7) 6-2 to Emanuelle Gagliardi, while Britain's two top-ranked players, Julie Pullin and Lucie Ahl, both went out yesterday. |
