Agassi maintains perfect start
Tuesday's ATP round-up

Andre Agassi
Agassi was too strong for Chang in San Jose
Siebel Open

Australian Open champion Andre Agassi stretched his 2003 unbeaten streak to eight matches, beating boyhood rival Michael Chang 6-4 6-2 in the first round in San Jose, California.

The 32-year-old top seed fired eight aces and had his American compatriot scampering from side to side with his booming groundstrokes.

Chang was not able to reach break point once against Agassi, who captured his eighth Grand Slam title in Melbourne last month.

Chang, 30, was in his first tournament since announcing he would end his 16-year professional career at the end of this year.

Jan-Michael Gambill beat 18-year-old Australian qualifier Todd Reid 6-2 6-0.

The big-hitting American completed the victory in 45 minutes.

In other matches, qualifier Paul Goldstein of the United States defeated Juan Balcells of Spain, and David Sanguinetti of Italy rallied for a three-set win over Zeljko Krajan of Croatia after losing the second set in a tie-breaker.

Robby Ginepri of the United States also had to go the distance, beating Kristian Pless of Denmark 4-6 6-1 6-4.

Open 13

Defending champion Thomas Enqvist has crashed out in the first round in Marseille.

The Swede, who was aiming for a fourth title success in the $500,000 tournament, was outgunned by Raemon Sluiter 7-6 7-6.

In what was the first meeting between the two, neither player looked likely to buckle on their own serve.

And it was the Dutchman, who overcame his slump in the recent Davis Cup defeat to Switzerland to take the upper hand in both tie breaks.

In the other first-round ties Slovakian Dominik Hrbaty cruised past Moroccan qualifier Hicham Arazi 6-1 6-3, while fellow qualifier Rodolphe Cadart, from France, came away a 6-4 6-3 winner against Georgia's Irakli Labadze.

BellSouth Open

Marcelo Rios won the all-Chilean first-round battle against Adrian Garcia on home soil.

The former world number one made light work of his Davis Cup opponent, winning 6-3 6-2 to progress in the $345,000 event.

And afterwards the confident Chilean said: "I have the feeling that I will win this tournament.

"I have never won a championship at home and it would be real nice to do it this time."

He now faces Spain's Albert Portas, who battled his way through a 7-5 1-6 7-5 tussle against Czech Frantisek Cermak.

Qualifier Marcos Daniel overturned the form book with a 7-5 6-4 win over fellow Brazilian Fernando Meligeni.

In Tuesday's late game, top seed Gaston Gaudio of Argentina beat Chile's Nicolas Massu 6-0 2-6 6-1.
