| Sunday, 16 February, 2003, 16:41 GMT Federer takes Marseille title
The 21-year-old world number six came through 6-2 7-6 at the Palais des Sports. "To me, it's a dream to win here," said Federer. "I was given a wild card here in 1999 and I beat Carlos Moya while being 300th in the world. "In 2000, I lost the final in the third set tie-break against Marc Rosset, so I was very nervous today. "I'm very happy to win this at last." Federer started the match strongly and broke twice to go 5-1 ahead, clinching the set in 35 minutes. Bjorkman improved in the second set and grabbed an early break but Federer recovered to force a tie-break, securing victory on his third match point. Despite the defeat, 31-year-old Bjorkman was upbeat about his current form. "I'm very pleased about my start to the season," said the Swede. "I reached the quarter-final in Milan, then I became a father in January and now I reached the final here." |
