Martin eases through
America's Todd Martin
Martin has been on an extended break from the game
Monday's ATP round-up

Siebel Open

American Todd Martin marked his return to action with a straight sets victory over compatriot Brian Vahaly to reach the second round of the Siebel Open.

The 32-year-old has been out of action since October when he took a break for family reasons. His wife gave birth to a son last month.

Despite the long lay-off, Martin was quickly back in gear against Vahaly, breaking him in the first game and going on to record a 6-4 6-3 victory.

Martin, the fifth seed in San Jose, hit nine aces and never lost his serve in the match.

In the day's only other singles match, eighth-seeded Kenneth Carlsen of Denmark defeated Sweden's Magnus Norman 7-5 3-6 7-6 (7/3).

BellSouth Open

Ecuador's Nicolas Lapentti could be fined after a last-minute withdrawal from the event in Vina del Mar through injury.

The second seed was due to make his debut in the tournament against Argentine Franco Squillari on Tuesday.

But Lapentti's trainer, Patricio Rodriguez, said the player had sustained a back injury in Ecuador's 3-2 Davis Cup win over Chile.

According to championship rules, Lapentti should have gone to the Pacific resort near Santiago to be checked by tournament doctors.

Spaniard Ruben Ramirez, the best performer in qualifying, was called in to replace Lapentti.

Fellow Spaniards Felix Mantilla and David Ferrer both enjoyed first-round victories on Monday.

Mantilla beat compatriot Alberto Martin 6-1 6-4 while Ferrer defeated Alex Kim of the United States 6-2 6-3.

Italy's Andrea Gaudenzi and Jiri Vanek of the Czech Republic also progressed.

Open 13

French teenager Richard Gasquet defeated Spain's Feliciano Lopez 6-7 6-4 6-4 in the first round of the $540,000 tournament in Marseille.

The 16-year-old Gasquet earned his third victory on the ATP circuit.

He will play on Thursday the winner of the match between Russia's Yevgeny Kafelnikov and Belgium's Olivier Rochus.
