Safin sent packing
Juan Carlos Ferrero prepares to hit a forehand in Hong Kong
Ferrero secured a spot in the semi-finals

Top seed Marat Safin was knocked out of the Salem Open by little-known Spaniard Feliciano Lopez.

The Russian was beaten 7-6 7-5 in a second-round match which had been delayed by heavy rain earlier in the week.

However, 21-year-old Lopez was then himself beaten in the quarter-finals by Swedish veteran Jonas Bjorkman.

Second seed Juan Carlos Ferrero also had to play two matches on Friday but safely negotiated both to reach the semi-finals.

The Spaniard first saw off French qualifier Antony Dupuis 6-4 6-4 to set up a last four meeting with Frenchman Jerome Golmard.

Golmard overcame a badly blistered right foot to upset fifth seed Juan Ignacio Chela of Argentina in straight sets.

Third seed Carlos Moya beat compatriot Francisco Clavet 6-4 3-6 6-1 and will now meet Bjorkman in the semi-finals.

Safin, who called on the trainer several times in his match, blamed his defeat on feeling physically below par.

"I couldn't move, I couldn't run, my reactions were very slow. I feel I have no power anymore. My legs were empty," he said.

Ferrero outrallied Dupuis from the baseline, breaking to take the first set 6-4.

Dupuis began to tire in the second and the Spaniard broke him in the fifth game and then served out for victory.
