Roddick sets up Canas clash
Argentina's Guillermo Canas
Canas won in three sets against Haas

Argentine Guillermo Canas booked his place in the final of the Toronto Masters with a 6-4 3-6 7-6 win over third seed Tommy Haas on Saturday.

The unseeded Canas became the first Argentine to reach the tournament final since Jose-Luis Clerc in 1978.

"I don't know why I have played so great," said a delighted Canas.

"Now I am just trying to believe I am in the final. Tomorrow I will start to think about what I need to do to win."

Haas, who had not played a match since the French Open, said: "I'm happy to get to the semis here but really it is tough to be happy right after losing this match.

"I'm frustrated - it was a tight match. I played some great tennis and had my chances here and there.

"I didn't have much confidence coming here but now I believe that, if my shoulder holds up, that I can be quite dangerous at the US Open."

Canas' path to his first Masters final was well-earned as he beat a host of top 10 players, including world number two Marat Safin, Yevgeny Kafelnikov and Roger Federer.

Canas claimed the first set 6-4 but after being broken at the first opportunity lost the second 3-6.

The Argentine recovered from an early break at the beginning of the third set to level the scores at 4-4 as the final set went to tie-break.

Final meeting

Canas clinched the first point of the tie-break and was never caught after that, clinching the match 7-5 when Haas' service return sailed wide.

Andy Roddick of the United States defeated Jiri Novak of the Czech Republic 6-4 6-3 to earn a final meeting with Canas.

The 19-year-old will become the youngest player to win the tournament since fellow American Michael Chang did so in 1990 if he defeats Canas on Sunday.

Roddick, the number 12 seed, improved to 44-13 in matches this year, but he is not taking Canas lightly.

"He really doesn't have a weakness," Roddick said. "He's played the best tennis of anybody all week.

"I'm going to have to play a really great match to get a win here."

Saturday's results:

  • Guillermo Canas (Arg) bt (3) Tommy Haas (Ger) 6-4 3-6 7-6 (7-5)
  • (12) Andy Roddick (US) bt (14) Jiri Novak (Cze) 6-4 6-3
