| Sunday, 4 August, 2002, 20:28 GMT 21:28 UK Canas triumphs in Canada ![]() Canas had a tough route to the final G Canas (Arg) bt A Roddick (US) 6-4 7-5 Argentina's Guillermo Canas beat American Andy Roddick 6-4 7-5 at the Toronto Masters on Saturday to lift his first ATP Masters Series title. The unseeded Canas became the first Argentine to win the Canadian tournament since Guillermo Vilas in 1976. Canas converted the second of three break chances in the first set to take a 5-4 lead and then went on to serve out the set. The Argentine carried the momentum into the second set, breaking Roddick at the first opportunity only for the American teenager to reply with a break of his own. With the set heading towards a tiebreak, Canas claimed the decisive break to go in front 6-5 when Roddick hit an easy backhand volley into the net. The Argentine then kept his nerve to serve out the final game of the match with three aces and a finishing volley. Canas' path to his first Masters title was well-earned as he beat a host of top 10 players, including world number two Marat Safin, Yevgeny Kafelnikov and Roger Federer. He reached the final with a three-set triumph over third seed Tommy Haas in Saturday's semi-final. Canas was the third unseeded player in as many years to play in the final at this event, following Israel's Harel Levy and Romania's Andrei Pavel. |
