Unseeded Russian Anna Kournikova dropped only one game as she powered to a 6-0 6-1 victory over American Alexandra Stevenson in a first-round match. Second seed Capriati eliminated fellow American Ashley Harkleroad 6-0 6-4 while Yugoslavia's Dokic defeated Spain's Gala Leon Garcia 6-2 7-5. "I think that I played well today. I really wasn't rusty out there. I think that I was hitting the ball well," Capriati said. "I played almost a perfect match in the first set." Kournikova's attempt to re-establish herself as an elite player continued when she destroyed 30th-ranked Stevenson.
The 47th-ranked Russian completely controlled the centre of the court and make light of Stevenson's huge first serve. "I played almost perfect," said Kournikova, who reached the quarter-finals of the Bank of the West Classic last week. "It was really important to get ahead of her early and not give her any room to breathe. I returned serve unbelievably well and felt really confident going for my shots." Unlike last year, when she went into the Acura Classic having been out of action for six months with a foot injury and tumbled out in the first round, Kournikova looked fast and focused. "It's a lot different," she said after cracking 16 winners past Stevenson. "Now when I go on court, I'm thinking about my game plan, rather than how to hit the ball. Tonight the score might have looked easy, but's its hard work to keep focused the whole time. "I was 99 percent good." Dokic was also pleased with her performance after losing to Lindsay Davenport in the Bank of the West Classic quarter-finals last week. "I thought that I was timing the ball well. I was happy that the match didn't go to three sets," Dokic said. "I think that I am playing much better this week than I did last week." Dokic faces Russia's Anastasia Myskina in the next round, who beat Italy's Francesca Schiavone 1-6 6-3 6-4. Top seed Venus Williams faces Slovakia's Janette Husarova on Wednesday, who reached the second round with a 6-3 6-1 triumph Tuesday over Italy's Adriana Serra Zanetti. Second round results: (2) J Capriati (US) bt A Harkleroad (US) 6-0 6-4 First round: A Kournikova (Rus) bt A Stevenson (US) 6-0 6-1 |
