Sampras ends losing streak

Sampras has struggled on clay this year
Tuesday's World Team Cup results

ended a run of three straight defeats on clay with victory over at the World Team Cup.

The former world number one came through 7-5 2-6 7-6 in two hours 39 minutes to give the United States victory over Argentina.

Argentina's Lucas Arnold and Gaston Etlis later beat James Blake and Jared Palmer 7-5 6-2 in the dead doubles rubber.

Sampras made it the final of the clay tournament in Houston last month but had since failed to shine on his least favourite surface.

His victory over Canas was far from convincing but Sampras was just happy to be back on the winning trail.

"It was as close as it's going to get," said the American. "At 5-5 in the breaker anything can happen.

"It was very satisfying to finally win a close one. I think we both played very well today.

"He ran down a lot of balls and I thought I had him a couple of times but he came up with some great passing shots."

In the day's other tie, Sweden needed a super tie-break in the deciding doubles to beat France 2-1.

gave the Swedes a great start with a 6-4 6-4 win over Nicolas Escude, but Arnaud Clement overcame Jonas Bjorkman 6-1 4-6 6-4 to level the tie.

Bjorkman and Enqvist then took the crucial doubles against Clement and Escude, winning 6-3 4-6 10-3.

France still lead the Red Group ahead of Sweden, Argentina and the United States, but with all teams having lost one tie each, the winners will be decided by the final round of matches.
