And the Spaniard tightened his grip on the match in the third, breaking Henman twice to prevail 6-2. Earlier, Martin Lee had lost in straight sets to Alex Corretja. Lee was standing in for Greg Rusedski, who pulled out with a neck injury. But he was unable to step up in class sufficiently to overcome Corretja, who came through 6-3 6-4. There was, however, better news for the British team in the redundant doubles rubber when Lee teamed up with Miles McLagan to register an excellent win over the far more experienced pairing of Corretja and Galo Blanco. Elsewhere, France battled to a 2-0 unassailable lead over the USA. In a rehearsal for the Davis Cup semi-final between the two countries in September, Arnaud Clement set the tone with a three-set victory over Andy Roddick. Later, Pete Sampras' miserable season continued as he went down to Nicolas Escude, also in three sets. | Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Other top Tennis stories: Links to more Tennis stories are at the foot of the page. | |||
