Britons start poorly in Team Cup
Tim Henman
Henman mixed his play cleverly in the first set
Sunday's World Team Cup results

Great Britain made a poor start to the World Team Cup in Dusseldorf when Tim Henman and Martin Lee lost their singles matches in the tie against Spain.

Henman's 4-6 6-3 6-2 defeat by Albert Costa on Saturday rendered the remaining doubles contest a dead rubber as the Spaniards held a 2-0 overall lead.

British Davis Cup coach Roger Taylor would have been hoping for a more encouraging show ahead of September's crucial World Group qualifier against Thailand.

Decisive break

That tie will at least be played on a surface more to Henman's liking, although he has enjoyed improved form on clay this year.

And he initially appeared to be taking that standard into his singles rubber, mixing his game up well in the first set to keep Costa guessing.

Henman broke his Spanish opponent in the opening game and took the set 6-4.

But Costa soon began to work Henman out and the contest turned around completely in the second.

This time Costa held the decisive break to level the match by taking the set 6-3.

Arnaud Clement
Clement took advantage of a tired-looking Roddick

And the Spaniard tightened his grip on the match in the third, breaking Henman twice to prevail 6-2.

Earlier, Martin Lee had lost in straight sets to Alex Corretja.

Lee was standing in for Greg Rusedski, who pulled out with a neck injury.

But he was unable to step up in class sufficiently to overcome Corretja, who came through 6-3 6-4.

There was, however, better news for the British team in the redundant doubles rubber when Lee teamed up with Miles McLagan to register an excellent win over the far more experienced pairing of Corretja and Galo Blanco.

Elsewhere, France battled to a 2-0 unassailable lead over the USA.

In a rehearsal for the Davis Cup semi-final between the two countries in September, Arnaud Clement set the tone with a three-set victory over Andy Roddick.

Later, Pete Sampras' miserable season continued as he went down to Nicolas Escude, also in three sets.

World Team Cup results:

Spain 2-1 Great Britain:
Alex Corretja bt Martin Lee 6-3 6-4
Albert Costa bt Tim Henman 4-6 6-3 6-2
Corretja/Galo Blanco lost to Lee/Miles McLagan 3-6 5-7

France 3-0 USA:
Arnaud Clement bt Andy Roddick 3-6 6-4 6-3
Nicolas Escude bt Pete Sampras 7-6 (7-3) 2-6 7-6 (7-2)
Clement/Escude bt James Blake/Jared Palmer 6-1 6-1
