Greg Rusedski has given his backing to Gustavo Kuerten's threat to miss Wimbledon.

Kuerten, who faces Spain's Alex Corretja in the French Open final on Sunday, said he was "almost sure" he would not play at Wimbledon.

The Brazilian world number one is among a group of top players threatening to boycott Wimbledon.

They are unhappy about the seeding procedure by the All England Club, and the lack of time between major tournaments.

British number two Rusedski said: "I can understand his thinking.

"I spoke with Gustavo and he's had a very tough year. Wimbledon and the French Open are too close.

"There needs to be a week or two weeks longer between them. There needs to be more of a gap.

"He's been seeded at Wimbledon before and never played on the show courts, even when he was number four in the world."

Rusedski spoke after getting his own preparations under way in an exhibition match in south London against former Wimbledon finalist Goran Ivanisevic.

His win over three-time runner-up Ivanisevic at the Powder Byrne Trophy at Surbiton was a much-needed confidence booster in the run-up to Wimbledon.

After sharing the opening two sets, Rusedski battled back from 5-1 down in a deciding tie-break to win 10-8 with an ace.

"It's great to get back on the grass," said Rusedski.

"It was great to have that one match before the real show starts with Queen's, Nottingham and Wimbledon."

"I'm really excited about the grass court season coming up," said Rusedski whose big serve-and-volley game is suited to grass.

"I'm happy with myself and if I can play good tennis I have a good chance to win and keep going in the tournaments.
