| Sunday, 9 July, 2000, 16:27 GMT 17:27 UK Will Botha really put Lewis to the test? Can Botha upset Lewis? Frans Botha takes on World heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis on Saturday and promises a spectacle - but will he really put Lewis to the test? As Botha gets ready for the clash at London Arena, he says he is in tremendous shape and stronger than ever. The South African powerhouse boasts a record of 25 knockouts in his 40 wins against two losses and claims he is the "best heavyweight out there." His excuse for losing to Mike Tyson in five rounds last year is, apparently, 'overconfidence' because the bout was too easy. However, Lewis has described Botha as merely "a thorn" in his side and some critics have stated that Botha's victories been against "soft competition." So is Botha just a warm-up for Lewis before his eagerly awaited tie against Tyson? What do you think? Will Botha really put Lewis to the test? As long as it is a good clean fight, and entertaining it doesn't really matter who 'wins' - they are both winners for getting in the ring. Botha is not like anyone Lewis has fought before, and above all, Botha has to prove himself and would see this as an oppurtunity to finally reach his potential. Lewis had better watch out.
I honestly believe that Lewis will win in the first two rounds. I'm not saying that Lewis is the 'Best boxer ever', but he is a very good all round boxer having a mixture of power and speed. I haven't seen Botha in action, but he looks like a brawler rather than a boxer. However, appearances can be deceptive. Basically Lewis is a league above this opponent, bring on Tyson. Dan Ellard, England I think Botha v Lewis will be a good match-up but ultimately Lewis will come out on top. But I just can't see, however hard I try to picture it, Lewis beating Iron Mike. The boxing world has not seen such a powerful hitter since the days of Sonny Liston. When Tyson fights Lewis, it will be a great fight! No doubt! But unfortunately there is not much a man can do to stay up on his own two feet when he is on a head-on collision course with a steamroller. As much as Lennox Lewis is a good fighter, it would be unwise for him to take Botha for granted, for a lose right now could have hell to pay later for his up and coming fight with Tyson. Lewis is the man at the moment. Botha's had his chances and should be nothing more than a warm-up for Lewis v Tua - a fighter who's done his time and deserves a chance, and who would be a real test for Lewis.
Botha is a hard hitting monster. I have seen him fight a number of times. Lewis does not stand a chance. Tim Swanepoel, England I think that Botha is really a warm-up for Lewis. Botha doesn't stand a chance. Frans Botha is no match for Lennox. Lennox is too quick and powerful for Botha. Whilst Botha should not be under-estimated, I still think that Lennox will close him down too quickly. Botha is a very resilient fighter but unfortunately I feel that keeping his guard up will be no match for the speed of Lewis. If Botha wants any chance of beating Lewis it will have to be by wearing him down. It won't be by way of a knockout. Good luck Lewis. Lewis is dodging the only real heavyweight out there - David Tua. He won't fight the man who's leading the new generation. Tua will reign supreme for years to come and the now over-the-hill Lewis is running scared - so is Mike Tyson. | See also: 04 Jul 00 | Sport 27 Jun 00 | Lewis in London Top Sports Talk stories now: Links to more Sports Talk stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
